About me
I’m Dr Kate Halcrow, an educator and researcher exploring the connections between literacy, language, and the creative arts. My work focuses on how rhythm, music, and artistic practices shape writing, learning, and cognitive development in classrooms.
I completed my BA (Hons) and Master of Teaching (Primary) at the University of Sydney in 1997, and returned to complete my PhD in 2017. My doctoral research explored the interdisciplinary links between music and writing — rhythm and grammar — drawing on neuro-cognitive and arts-based perspectives, and involved empirical studies in classrooms across NSW and the ACT. I’ve had the opportunity to present and publish internationally and in Australia, including at research forums in France and the UK.
Over more than 20 years I have worked as a classroom teacher and school leader, and have led professional learning in K–12 Independent, Catholic, and public schools in Sydney, Canberra, and rural NSW. I’ve served as Head of Primary, Curriculum Coordinator, and classroom teacher.
Since 2021, I’ve been lecturing at the University of Canberra and the University of Sydney, teaching English literacy, the arts, HASS, Human Development, and curriculum studies. In 2025, I took up the role of Primary Program Director within the School of Teacher Education. I also supervise doctoral students, and my research interests continue to focus on literacy, language, the creative arts (music and drama), philosophy, and civics education.
